“My Meeting with Marshall Goldsmith - Coaching Legend” - Professor M.S.Rao

When I opened my mail inbox at 1300 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on August 20, 2012, I saw an e-mail from Dr. Marshall Goldsmith who is a Million-selling author of the New York Times bestsellers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won't Get You There.  He is an executive coach for top CEOs in the world and has been ranked as the World’s 7th Management Thinker according to Thinkers50.  Marshall conveyed a personal message to me as we are known to each other since long and he gave me a number of endorsements for my books, and wrote foreword for one of my books, and also for one of my books of my son. I thanked Marshall for the mail as the mail came when the latter was in Dubai on August 19, 2012.  I received another e-mail immediately to my response, and recognized from his email signature that Marshall was in Hyderabad on August 20, 2012.  I was excited as I never met him personally except communicating through e-mails regularly.  I enquired Marshall about the Hotel and other details.  I immediately informed my two sons – M. Ganesh Sai and M. Ramakrishna Sayee over phone about Marshall’s visit to Hyderabad and asked them to get ready at home as I was outside to interview Marshall.

I along with my two sons went to Westin Mindspace and met Marshall at 1500 hours (IST) on August 20, 2012 in room number 1702.  We received warm welcome from Marshall who appeared very simple.  He introduced himself with his brief profile and asked all of us to introduce with our profiles.  He had a great sense of humor and never felt like a great person although he is a renowned coach globally and the #1 ranked coaching guru in the world.

We discussed various global leadership issues and challenges and got photographed with him along with my two sons.   My two sons interviewed him for 45 minutes. Marshall was pleased with my two sons and gifted them a comic book titled, ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’ with his autograph.  We were excited meeting such a great global management thinker who is very simple, humble and above all, a fine human being.  It is a memorable day in our lives as Marshall spent his personal time with us for 90 minutes approximately.  It shows how he cares his friends and others.
