“We all were Born from the Wombs of Women” - Professor M.S.Rao

“The thing women have yet to learn is nobody gives you power. You just take it.” - Roseanne Barr

The recent gang-raping of a woman in the midnight in a moving bus in Delhi in India has drawn attention across India. It indicates that there is no safety for the women in the independent India. It shows the way men treat and objectify women in their real lives. Some people blame cinema and media responsible for such atrocities on women. In fact, cinema provides entertainment and media spreads information.  Hence, it is something beyond cinema and media.

Rape is a sexual encounter on opposite sex without any consent. It happens usually on women by men, and in rare cases it happens on men by women.  Men rape women through physical force while the women rape men through mental force. Rape is an inhuman and cruel act. It is a brutal invasion of a woman’s space and freedom. Rapists are beasts without any rational and logical mind. They go by animalistic instincts to fulfill their sexual desires by any means.

Let us appreciate the fact that it is natural for a politician to show his powers; a wealthy man to exhibit his wealth; a knowledgeable man to demonstrate his wisdom; an artist to show his talent; a sportsperson to show his skills; and a beautiful woman to show her beauty. These are all natural tendencies among human beings. But an ordinary individual should never think of grabbing such things without their permission.  They can work hard, smart and wise and acquire them through an ethical and acceptable social behavior.

Id, Ego and Super Ego

It is deplorable that Swamis and male chauvinists blame women for moving in the midnight and maintaining indecent attire. There are other reasons responsible for such incidents. According to the noted psychologist, Sigmund Freud, the human mind is trifurcated into three compartments - Id, Ego and Super Ego. Id is instinctive and irrational; Ego is rational and logical; and Super Ego is ethical and moral. Id can be compared with a demon; Ego can be compared with a human being; and Super Ego can be compared with an angel. Hence, Ego is the human being carrying the demon of Id on one side of the shoulder and the angel of Super Ego on the other side of the shoulder. Every man encounters these three stages every time.  He will be rational and logical when he is able to crush his irrational and instinctive – Id, and allows it to be overtaken by Ego. If he allows it further, he will appreciate from ethical angle and stand out from others as a role-model. When we look at rapes on women, it is the Id which is responsible for such instant and instinctive inhuman acts.  Although desire to have sex is a natural one for every human being the human mind must think logically and rationally that it is essential to have consent of opposite sex to have sex. But sometimes men are instigated in the wrong company of friends and resort to such heinous acts. At the same time, women must understand the basic body language to convey right signals to others in public place.  Some women don’t realize that they send tempting signals to others unconsciously from their body language. Mistaking such signals as welcoming gestures, men resort to such inhuman acts ending up in a fiasco.

Remedial Measures

Parental upbringing matters a lot to check atrocities on women and prevent rapes. Parents must teach their children how to behave with fairer sex. NGOs can take active part in helping the victims; checking the atrocities on women; and highlight such brutal acts to serve as deterrent. Men must empathize that they were born to women.  They should not get intoxicated by irrational and instant sexual temptations.

Women must take precautions to defend from such rogues by mastering the basics of martial arts and using them at an appropriate time to defend themselves. They can also send message through their cell phones to police to get timely assistance when they sense that some untoward incident is going to take place.  They must also learn the basics of body language that tempt men to resort to rape.  The existing Indian laws are not enough, and hence, it is time to plug the loopholes in the law to avert such incidents. Government must provide more security cover to women. Men’s perception towards women must change. There must be a drastic change in the mindsets of men towards women to respect and treat women with dignity.

Conclusion

Indian men must not treat women as sexual objects. They must respect the egos, emotions and feelings of women. They must empathize with women. Before advancing a woman with evil intentions men must think a number of times about the women in their family.  If they think in that way, and empathize with women the atrocities on women will come down.

Swami Vivekananda rightly said, “All nations have attained greatness by paying proper respect to women.” Hence, let us respect women to attain greatness. Let us not forget that we all were born from the wombs of women.
