“Avoid Suicidal Tendencies to Live Long Life with Meaning and Success” - Professor M.S.Rao

“God allows us to experience the low points of life in order to teach us lessons we could not learn in any other way. The way we learn those lessons is not to deny the feelings but to find the meanings underlying them.” -  Stanley Lindquist

It’s unfortunate that suicides are increasing at an alarming rate in India and especially in the South India with Andhra Pradesh topping in number of suicides. It is sad to note that people commit suicide on petty issues and especially Indian youth are committing more on insignificant issues. Research reveals that next to road accidents it is the suicides leading to loss of Indian youth. Most of the suicides would’ve been averted if the youth were counseled properly and guided timely.  Hence, I decided to address this problem squarely as I’m passionate about my Indian youth.

Youth are often carried away by temporary emotions and adopt short-cut to cut short their lives. They must realize that God has given them life and He alone can take it. Some of the causes among the youth are due to failure in love, academic pressure, poor performance, unable to live up to parental expectations, and financial hardships.

Acquire Emotional Quotient (EQ)

Life is full of ups and downs and people must learn to balance their emotions and motivate their emotions especially when they hit lows in their lives. If they exercise restraint and hold positive thoughts for a few seconds they’ll be able to bounce back from depression and stay motivated.  When they feel uncomfortable and are carried away by suicidal tendencies they must consult doctors or share their inner feelings with their family members or trusted friends to find comfort and come out with solutions.  In this regard, people should understand emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) where it’s a fivefold process of identifying their emotions, managing their emotions, motivating their emotions, identifying the emotions of others and managing them. When the affected people find themselves in depression mode they must learn to manage and motivate their emotions to come back to normalcy quickly.

Observe Children

It’s observed that the people who’ve suicidal tendencies demonstrate abnormal behavior, different mood levels and often stay aloof from others.  When parents find such tendencies in their children they must spend some time with their children to connect and create emotional stability.  Parents must not put any pressure on their children to score high grades and marks academically.  It may result in feeling guilty or depressed when they don’t perform well.  Parents must encourage competitive and collaborate spirit among their children to enable them to compete and collaborate as per the situation.  If children don’t perform well academically they should be put in their passionate areas so that they can enjoy what they like to do and grow in their lives.  Parents must not compare their children with others as everyone is unique in the world with unique gifts and talents.  In addition, when they compare their children with others they are insulting their children by downplaying their children’s’ unique strengths and gifts.  Parents must also monitor movements of their children and their friends with whom they move closely to understand their pulse and act accordingly.

Take Action

Here are a few steps to check suicidal tendencies and bounce back from depression:

  • Set goals in your life. When you set goals you can remove your negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts.  You can manage your time and stay focused clearly on your goals to provide meaning to your life.
  • Think positive and be positive through your inner dialogue.  We all have inner dialogue wherein we talk to ourselves throughout the day.  Set that dialogue tone positive to become positive and behave positive.
  • Surround with positive people.  When you surround with positive people you get positive vibes and grow like a healthy individual.
  • Hit gym regularly or do meditation or go for a walk as it builds high energy levels and provides you with a positive outlook towards life.
  • Talk to someone with whom you feel comfortable when you hit lows.
  • Take meal regularly to fuel your body constantly with energy and enthusiasm.
  • Read good books, magazines and novels to acquire knowledge and build positive attitude.
  • Find out your passionate areas and pursue your hobbies.  When you pursue them you enjoy your life fully and also build a network of likeminded friends.
  • Have fun in life.  Enjoy your present life without worrying about the unpleasant past and the unpredictable future.
  • Consult psychiatrist when you hit lows frequently to get timely help.
  • Enjoy your journey of life to reach your final destination of success.
  • Above all, look at the door that is opened, not the one that is closed.

Face Challenges

Suicide is not the solution for several problems in the world.  If suicide is the only solution we’ll find only dead bodies on the earth as all human beings have problems.  The truth is that some people disclose their problems while some conceal their problems as mindsets of the people are different.

It is rightly said, ‘when God solves your problems, you have faith in his abilities….When He doesn’t solve your problems, He has faith in your abilities…” Hence, face the challenges head-on.  When the going gets tough, tough gets going.  Life is incomplete without peaks and valleys.  Remember that it’s the weak who commit suicide while the strong survive in the world. Hence, be a strong person and face the battles in your life.

God has created you with some purpose.  You’ve only one life.  Your role is to execute your tasks effectively and leave this world a better place to live for others.  Do your duties sincerely and always think of contributing your best to make a difference in the lives of others.  You’ve no right to take your life.  No religion encourages suicide.  Remember, it is a privilege to be born as a human being.

"Count your blessings. Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward in the life that God intended for you with grace, strength, courage, and confidence." - Og Mandino
