“I Stand on the Shoulders of Great Students – Birthday Gift to my Students” - Professor M.S.Rao

“A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.” – Anonymous

Today is my birth anniversary. I received lots of e-mails from my students and some of my ex-students phoned me from various parts of the world greeting on the eve of my birthday. I am touched with their reverence! I am moved with their love and affection! Here are my feelings to share with all of my beloved students:

Many people ask me the reason behind my academic advancement and success. I tell them that I am what I am because of my students. I am what I am because of their love and affection. I am what I am because of their overwhelming continuous support for the last eight years. In fact, I am a small professor standing on the shoulders of giants who are great and passionate students.

My lifetime vision is to build one million students as global leaders by 2030. I often think about my students. I am very passionate about them. Whatever the books I read, it is for my students.  Whatever I learn is for my students.  Every parent wants their children to grow much bigger than them. Similarly, I want my students to grow much smarter and bigger than me. I want them to overtake me in terms of knowledge, experience and success. I consider their success my success. It is a privilege that I have crossed my path with some of the best students in my lifetime.  I am happy that I have made a difference in the lives of students.

It is a privilege to be born in this world. It is an honor to associate the dedicated and passionate students during my lifetime. I thank God for gifting me wonderful life to serve my students. I thank God for giving me the opportunity to read many books in my life. I thank God for giving me rich diversified experience in various areas to share with others. Overall, I am very excited to be born as a human being, and it is an honor to become a professor to share my knowledge with my students.

Once again, I thank all my loving students through social media for their greetings and love and affection.

“Bridge the Gap between the Educators and the Students” – Professor M.S.Rao

“It is the leader’s responsibility to serve as a role model, to mentor the next generation of leaders, and to make sure that continuous opportunities for learning and development are provided.” – Lois Zachary

Currently the gap between the educators and the students is widening vastly in various educational institutions in India. It often leads to miscommunication and conflicts. Hence, this article addresses the gap between the educators and the students to ensure due respect to the educators and effective learning outcomes to the students.

The world is changing rapidly due to growth in technology. The young generation is highly advanced in their mindset and attitude. In fact, they are must smarter than the educators who belong to older generation with a different school of thought. The age gap is wide and the expectations are different. The educators find it tough to catch up with the technology due to their age factor while the students who fall in young generation are quick to adapt and catch up with the technology. The educators expect a lot of respect from students because they respected their educators when they were students. Unfortunately, the present generation of students are not ready to respect the educators who don’t deliver their goods properly. The educators must remember that they cannot demand respect just because they are educators, and they are into teaching profession. In fact, respect must be earned and honor must be accorded. And the students are ready to respect the educators who deliver their goods as per their expectations. At home also, the parents find it tough to catch up with their children as their expectations are much higher. The parents who are rich are ready to meet some of the expectations of their children. However, the parents who are from middle class and poor family background find it tough to meet their expectations. At times parents feel guilty for not rising up to the expectations of their children which most children are not aware of. The children are willing to accept the excuses of their parents but they demand more as some of their colleagues and friends are in better position and enjoy the advantages. Both the peer pressure and age pressure along with technology led to the present problem of generation gap between the parents and the children at home, and the educators and the students in educational institutions.

For every problem, there is a solution. There are a number of solutions for this problem also. Both the parents and the children at home, and the educators and the students in educational institutions must have flexibility to get along to create chemistry and compatibility. Both parents and children must empathize with each others’ limitations. If students are ambitious, they must work hard to accomplish their dreams rather than demanding too much from their parents and educators to avoid conflicts. Currently people are getting more rights-oriented rather than duty-oriented which is a step in the wrong direction. Hence, the young generation must have zeal and enthusiasm and work hard accordingly to accomplish their goals. They must not thrust their expectations and aspirations on others as it leads to conflicts at home and in educational institutions.

Parents must understand that the world is changing rapidly and they must also change with the changing times and technology. They must regularly spend some time with their children and the educators must spend some time with their students to understand their pulse and expectations to adapt and change to bridge the gap.

Hence, bridging the gap between the students and the educators is not a big issue when both are keen to understand others’ perspective and appreciate others’ limitations.  Let us bridge this gap by becoming duty-oriented rather than rights-oriented, and empathize with others to bring peace and prosperity to build a better society. Jai Hind!

“Importance of Soft Skills for Indian Students in Campus Placement Interviews”- Professor M.S.Rao

“It takes humility to seek feedback. It takes wisdom to understand it, analyze it and appropriately act on it.” - Stephen Covey

Recently I was invited by an educational institution in India to take feedback from students who attended campus placement of a prestigious Information Technology company.  The students attended the campus placement, and the institution decided to take feedback from both successful and unsuccessful students to improve its placement for the next batch of students.  I agreed to their invitation as I am passionate about students.

Students have been divided into two sections – successful and unsuccessful students. We took inputs from both successful and unsuccessful students to enable others to understand what worked and what did not work during the campus placement.

Students shared that it is essential to practice for aptitude test which includes verbal and reasoning by managing their time properly. They must undertake the aptitude test with speed and accuracy to get into the next round of HR interview. During the HR interview, it is essential to speak with confidence. Apart from hard skills, soft skills are also essential to grab the employment offer.

The IT Company gave its feedback about students as follows: Most students are not good at basic technical skills. Some of them have attitudinal problem. Some students presented negative body language. Most of them lacked communication and soft skills. Additionally, they have very high expectations from employers. They think of adding value to themselves rather than adding value to the company.

Finally, we summarized the feedback as follows after taking inputs from students, faculty, recruiters, soft skills trainers, and educational institutions as follows:

Students must acquire soft skills and prepare thoroughly well in advance to grab the employment offers. They must possess positive and right attitude which is the key to success during employment interview. We are excited that the expectations of the students are rising high. Hence, they must work hard accordingly to grab the employment offers. The educational institution must conduct mock interviews and campus recruitment training (CRT) programs regularly, and well in advance to build confidence among students. The Training and Placement Officer (TPO) in the educational institution must take initiative to bring prestigious companies to the campus to enable students to have more campus placements. The soft skills trainers within the educational institution must find out the needs of students, identify the gaps in their skills, and fill those gaps through training to make them employable and deployable as the industry craves industry-ready employees.

To summarize, there must be an integrated approach among various stakeholders including, students, faculty, soft skills trainers, recruiters and educational institutions to build employability skills among the students to enable them to pass out educational institutions with employment offers.
