“Create Your Career Blueprint” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Analyzing what you haven't got as well as what you have is a necessary ingredient of a career.” – Orison Swett Marden

Students must be careful while choosing their careers.  Indian students often go by herd instinct.  At times they pursue their careers based on parental pressure or peer pressure.  In fact, they must pursue their career based on their talents rather than due to pressures from other quarters.

Students must conduct SWOT analysis where SWOT is the acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and then pursue their careers.   They must list out their strengths and weaknesses and leverage their strengths and create their career blueprints.  Then they must consider the threats in their careers, and then the opportunities.  The SWOT tool is an amazing tool.  After considering all four areas of strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities, they must list couple of careers based on their talents, and then shortlist the best one.  They must build their skills and abilities around their talents keeping their careers in view as it makes things easier for them to achieve their career goals and objectives.

Another method to approach is to emphasis on 4As where 4As stand for Attitude, Aptitude, Abilities and Awareness.  They must have positive attitude towards their careers they are choosing to enjoy working with satisfaction.  Then, they must consider their aptitude as each student has their own mental capabilities. For instance, some students may have analytical and research bent of mind.  They can work in research and development organizations.  Some students may have interest in computer and information technology.  Such students can opt for their careers in IT services.  Some students may be extrovert and good at communication skills, and such students can work in BPO sectors.  Therefore, based on their aptitude levels students must choose their careers.  Then the third A is the abilities where it is essential for students to acquire the abilities and skills based on their attitude and aptitude.  Finally, the fourth A is Awareness.  There are a number of students having attitude, aptitude, and abilities but they don’t have awareness about career opportunities.   Therefore, they must network with people of similar career backgrounds to grab career opportunities.

Therefore, you must adopt SWOT tool or 4As techniques or both to create a blueprint for your career success.

Good Luck!

“The biggest mistake that you can make is to believe that you are working for somebody else. Job security is gone. The driving force of a career must come from the individual. Remember: Jobs are owned by the company, you own your career!” - Earl Nightingale
