“Be a Manager, not a Damager” - Professor M.S.Rao

"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind."-William James

The main difference between a manager and a damager is attitude. Attitude is all about how you perceive and look at others. If you have a positive attitude you look at people and things around you positively.  In contrast, if you have a negative attitude you look at people and things around you negatively.  Winston Churchill once said, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

A person with a positive attitude leads his life happily and makes others around him happy whereas a person with a negative attitude brings misery for himself and others. Hence, everything is there in the mind of the individual. Most of the problems in the society are due to the negative attitude of the people.  When people have positive attitude and take responsibility the society will be in a better position. Here goes the difference between the positive and negative attitude:

If a teacher teaches students well, and makes the difference in the lives of students then he has a positive attitude.  In contrast, if the teacher shows his egoism and troubles students then he has a negative attitude towards students. If a doctor saves the life of a patient he has a positive attitude.  In contrast, if he shows his powers to kill the patient then he has a negative attitude.  An engineer can make great constructions with his positive attitude.  However, if he displays his engineering skills for destruction then he has a negative attitude.

A company sent two marketing executives - Ken and Ben to an island to market shoes.  Upon reaching the island Ken found that nobody was wearing shoes. He immediately faxed his boss that he was returning as nobody was wearing shoes. However, Ben saw it as an opportunity, and asked the boss to send 10,000 pair of shoes to sell as nobody was wearing shoes. Ken displayed negative attitude by looking at the threats while the Ben displayed positive attitude by looking at the opportunities.  Their actions remind us the quote of Thomas Carlyle who said, “The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak, became a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong.”   From this story, it is obvious the difference between positive and negative attitude, and between the manager and the damager.  Frederick L. Collins rightly quoted, “There are two types of people - those who come into a room and say, "Well, here I am!" and those who come in and say, "Ah, there you are."”  Hence, have a positive, right and strong attitude to become a manager and also a leader.

"Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it." --Lou Holtz

  1. Interesting article to read. Attitude is everything. Most people for example in a workplace have problems because of their negative attitude
