“A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever” - Professor M.S.Rao

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever: Its loveliness increases; It will never Pass into nothingness.” ― John Keats

Recently I attended annual day celebrations of a college and was returning home in their college bus. I was very excited the way the annual day was celebrated, and especially I enjoyed speeches delivered by prestigious personalities. A woman faculty member sitting behind me in the college bus started to criticize the management of the educational institution for not giving any prizes to their girl students as the faculty belonged to women’s college. And her girl students were also sitting around her. She also criticized in the presence of her girl students that the girls from her college were used by management of the educational institution to give away awards to the noted personalities on the dais. I felt very bad the kind of language she used in the bus about girl students and in front of them.

I realized that the women faculty was upset with management and unhappy that none of her girl students received any prizes. I intervened with a smile and said her as follows:

Instead of thinking that the girls from your college were used by management, think with a positive perception that the girls from your college are so beautiful that they were invited to give away bouquets and awards to the dignitaries on the dais. After listening to my comment the girl students felt happy.  Secondly, I told to women faculty to think and say as follows: “The girls from our women college are so broadminded that they give awards to others and don’t expect any prizes from others. Also, I added that without the active participation of beautiful girls from our college the annual day celebrations will be incomplete.”

The women faculty smiled and felt happy with the way I presented her statements in a positive light and girls were so excited with my compliment. And all of us travelled back to home by college bus with sweet memories.

From this story, it is obvious that everything depends on the way we look at things. If you look at positively everything looks positive; and if you look at negatively everything looks negative. George Harrison rightly quoted, “It's all in the mind.”  Remember the slogan: “We see the world the way we are, not the way they are.” Convert your mindset from complaining to compliment to make the people around you happy.

“Ideas and Ideals of Swami Vivekananda” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success - that is the way great spiritual giants are produced." – Swami Vivekananda.

I attended a seminar on Swami Vivekananda organized by Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence as I am follower of Swami Vivekananda. I read his books 25 years ago and acquired lots of knowledge and share it with my students regularly. I attended the seminar to find out the latest developments and how Swami Vivekananda’s messages are spread across the country.

Swami Vivekananda needs no introduction as every Indian knows him and most of the Indian youth follow into his footsteps.  He was the proud son of India who awakened great interest on India and Indians at Chicago Conference.  He conquered America without any bullet.

Swami Vivekananda believed in character building among Indian youth. He preached Indians to be original and implored to enhance their concentration to achieve great success. He emphasized not only on good Indians but also on strong Indians who can preserve Indian civilization and values forever.

Currently Indian youth are flooded with western culture and technology and it is time for them to change their mindset. It is unfortunate that they believe more in ‘cell-confidence’ rather than ‘self-confidence’.  They must emphasize on inspiration, intuition and innovation to grow India as a strong nation. They must respect and love our culture and at the same time they must take the best from western culture as all cultures have unique advantages to understand and apply.

As you love your mother you must love your motherland. As you love your own brothers and sisters you must love all Indian citizens as brothers and sisters. It is time for Indian youth to take up the challenge and lead from the front to make an economically vibrant India.

Future of India is in your hands. Swami Vivekananda dedicated his entire life for religious toleration and universal brotherhood. He emphasized values among Indian youth and as a result, he is remembered forever as a youth leader. He is a legend who lived beyond his times and continues to live forever in the history of India. India celebrates his birth anniversary as a Youth Day. Therefore, the present youth must understand his ideas and ideals, and principles and philosophies to create a vibrant and great India.

Remember, when you awaken youth you awaken India. Therefore, all stakeholders including educators, parents, elders and NGOs must guide youth in a right direction to become good and strong citizens and leaders so that they can lead this nation with confidence.

“A few heart-whole, sincere, and energetic men and women can do more in a year than a mob in a century.” – Swami Vivekananda
