“Significance of HR Subject for Students” - Professor M.S.Rao

“The best HR people are a kind of hybrid: one part pastor, who hears all sins and complaints without recrimination, and one part parent, who loves and nurtures, but gives it to you fast and straight when you’re off track.” – Jack Welch

On the other day, I was asked to deliver a brief lecture for five minutes on the significance of HR (Human Resources) subject for MBA students. Although I taught HR, soft skills, and leadership, I found myself struggling for condensing the HR content within my mind. Then I lectured as follows:

In a country like India, most of the students prefer either marketing or finance, and very few students choose HR subject as they either find it uninteresting or boring.  Some students think that they may not find employment opportunities. In addition, there is a general perception that women choose HR domain as they can work in office thus avoiding physical mobility. Hence, I implored students to take up the subject as per their interest and aptitude rather than going by herd instinct. Especially choosing the right domain will help them enjoy their careers.

People in the past thought that HR was basically for wining and dining. It was like conducting parties for employees and keeping them in good humor during employment. Currently the trend has changed as it is the people who build the organizations. Hence, there is more significance attached to HR. When you look at Infosys Technologies in India, it grew basically because of a strong HR.

HR deals from recruitment to retirement and it involves various activities in its fold such as training, grooming, performance appraisals, pay and incentives to name a few.  There is a slogan in HR, ‘hire slowly and fire fast’. It means when the employers recruit they must be careful in looking at the suitability, capability, eligibility of the candidates apart from attitude. The HR also emphasizes more on attitude than experience as an employee with great attitude with less experience is preferred over the one with a nil attitude with great experience. Precisely, HR people hire for attitude and recruit for skills. If they find that the attitude is good then they are prepared to recruit the candidates to train them.

Finally I implored MBA students to follow their heart and take up the area in which they are comfortable and confident to succeed as HR professionals.

“If you want to manage people effectively, help them by making sure the org chart leaves as little as possible to the imagination. It should paint a crystal-clear picture of reporting relationships and make it patently obvious who is responsible for what results.” – Jack Welch

“My Meeting with Marshall Goldsmith - Coaching Legend” - Professor M.S.Rao

When I opened my mail inbox at 1300 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on August 20, 2012, I saw an e-mail from Dr. Marshall Goldsmith who is a Million-selling author of the New York Times bestsellers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won't Get You There.  He is an executive coach for top CEOs in the world and has been ranked as the World’s 7th Management Thinker according to Thinkers50.  Marshall conveyed a personal message to me as we are known to each other since long and he gave me a number of endorsements for my books, and wrote foreword for one of my books, and also for one of my books of my son. I thanked Marshall for the mail as the mail came when the latter was in Dubai on August 19, 2012.  I received another e-mail immediately to my response, and recognized from his email signature that Marshall was in Hyderabad on August 20, 2012.  I was excited as I never met him personally except communicating through e-mails regularly.  I enquired Marshall about the Hotel and other details.  I immediately informed my two sons – M. Ganesh Sai and M. Ramakrishna Sayee over phone about Marshall’s visit to Hyderabad and asked them to get ready at home as I was outside to interview Marshall.

I along with my two sons went to Westin Mindspace and met Marshall at 1500 hours (IST) on August 20, 2012 in room number 1702.  We received warm welcome from Marshall who appeared very simple.  He introduced himself with his brief profile and asked all of us to introduce with our profiles.  He had a great sense of humor and never felt like a great person although he is a renowned coach globally and the #1 ranked coaching guru in the world.

We discussed various global leadership issues and challenges and got photographed with him along with my two sons.   My two sons interviewed him for 45 minutes. Marshall was pleased with my two sons and gifted them a comic book titled, ‘What Got You Here Won’t Get You There’ with his autograph.  We were excited meeting such a great global management thinker who is very simple, humble and above all, a fine human being.  It is a memorable day in our lives as Marshall spent his personal time with us for 90 minutes approximately.  It shows how he cares his friends and others.

“Significance of JAM Session for Students” - Professor M.S.Rao

"I only wish I could find an institute that teaches people how to listen. Business people need to listen at least as much as they need to talk. Too many people fail to realize that real communication goes in both directions." - Lee Iacocca, Former CEO Chrysler Corporation

JAM is the acronym for Just A Minute.  In this process, students are asked to speak on a topic of their choice or on a given topic for a minute. It is conducted for students to improve their communication skills. It helps the introvert and shy students to take initiative and speak on the topic for a minute. It helps students condense the entire essence precisely in their mind, and speak only the relevant aspects within a minute.  In addition, it can be used during the teaching session as well by the teachers.  After completion of the teaching session, the teachers can ask the volunteers or handpick some students and ask them to speak what they understood about the session. By this, students will be able to listen and learn well.  It is an integral part of Meka’s Method, an innovative tool coined by this author.

Some companies conduct JAM session during their employment interview to test the communication skills of the candidates. That is the reason JAM is included in Campus Recruitment Training Programs to encourage students to improve their communication skills thus enhancing their employability skills. Hence, students must actively participate in JAM sessions in educational institutions to improve their communication skills and grab employment opportunities.

“Soft Leadership - A New Leadership Style” - Professor M.S.Rao

“To give you an ounce of idea I dig tons of information.” – Professor M.S.Rao, Founder, MSR Leadership Consultants, India

I have coined a new concept – soft leadership which is drawing international attention with more curiosity about it, and the readers are sending me e-mails to contribute more articles on it. I thought to blog a small post about it.

In fact, we have so many styles in leadership, and I felt that there is a need for a new leadership style as per the changing times and technologies, and due to the rising expectations and aspirations of people.  Hence, I have done research for few years on soft leadership style, and authored a book titled, ‘Soft Leadership: Make Others Feel More Important’ (ISBN 978-81-7515-653-1).  World’s 23rd ranked Management Guru, Dave Ulrich wrote foreword for this book. The book can be purchased URL: http://www.amazon.com/Soft-Leadership-Make-others-important/dp/8175156538  I also wrote an article on it, and published in prestigious Leader to Leader Journal in Spring 2012 issue, and you can purchase it URL: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ltl.20019/abstract

This soft leadership style blends leadership with soft skills as I have done my PhD in soft skills. Both soft skills and leadership are close to my heart, and I created soft leadership where leaders lead from the front with soft skills. This style has proximity with democratic, charismatic, principle-centered, servant, transformational leadership but a unique one as soft leaders of this style are distinguished by 11 Cs – character, charisma, conscience, conviction, courage, communication, compassion, commitment, consistency, consideration, and contribution to make a difference in the lives of others.

You will find more articles on soft leadership in my blog as and when I get new triggers on it. Hence, watch my blog for this new leadership style.

“Learn to Appreciate Differences” - Professor M.S.Rao

“All differences in this world are of degree, and not of kind, because oneness is the secret of everything.” - Swami Vivekananda

With the rapid changes in technology the globe has become a small village. We need to change with the changing times and technologies to stay ahead of others. At the same time, we must learn to appreciate differences. Here are the tools to appreciate the differences:

Love your mother but don’t hate others’ mother. As your mother is precious to you, the others’ mother is precious to them. As your religion, region, culture, community, language, and caste is precious to you, it is equally precious to others. When you look at from this perspective you appreciate the differences.

Empathize with others. Empathy is the ability to look from the perspective of others. It is the ability to step into the shoes of others, and look from others’ perspective.  In fact, when you empathize with others most of the problems in the world will be resolved easily. Of course, when you empathize there is least scope for problems!

Look at the similarities, not differences. When you look at differences, everything sounds strange and complicated whereas when you see commonalities in everything, you find everything pleasant in this world.  Hence, develop such perception to look at similarities among others.

Be tolerant towards others.  Open up and talk to people, you will develop more tolerance.

Travel various places as traveling opens the window to the outside world. Otherwise, you remain like a frog in the world. In addition, travel is a component of investigation and a spur to idea generation.

When you look at commonalities the conflicts can be minimized and communication can be maintained leading to fraternity.  Follow these tips and you will find minimizing the differences; appreciating them; and looking at commonalities among others. It takes you to be a leader with a global perspective.

India is a land of unity in diversity.  Despite being differences in religions, regions, languages, races, ethnicities, and communities Indians are united on one plank of Indianness which substantiates the slogan of ‘unity in diversity’.  Swami Vivekananda highlighted India’s greatness in Chicago Conference by addressing the entire audience as ‘brothers and sisters’ which shows oneness and togetherness among the people cutting across all barriers. Indian culture has great degree of tolerance, and this land is one of the best lands on the earth as it absorbed various cultures, religions, races, and communities in its fold since time immemorial. To conclude in the words of M. Scott Peck, “Share our similarities, celebrate our differences.”

“Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” - Stephen Covey

“Excellence is an Attitude” - Professor M.S.Rao

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit."  Aristotle

Excellence is a hallmark of great individuals. Excellence differentiates between successful individuals and failures.  It differentiates between performers and non-performers. Believing in excellence helps you stand taller in whatever the area you are into. But the moot point here is how to excel in your chosen area of activity to ensure your longevity. Here are the points to consider towards building your excellence:

Learn continuously and constantly with an open mind. Try to do research in your area of interest regularly and update yourself.  Network with the people of your area of interest through association and collaboration.

You must learn from various sources. When you are at home read good books, browse internet and acquire the latest information in your domain. Update yourself, find out new triggers, and work on them.  Watch television channels of your area of interest and grab the information needed about your domain. When you are in office talk to your colleagues and generate fresh knowledge.  Also share your knowledge with others so that there can be exchange and proliferation of knowledge. When you talk to others in the workplace you acquire more ideas about your domain and work on them constantly.

Join associations in your area of interest as you acquire more knowledge from many sources. In addition, you will be able to build great connections and achieve quick professional success.  If you get an opportunity share your knowledge in forums so that you get noticed by others as a domain expert thus enhancing your professional image.

Go to a serene place and you get more ideas about your area of interest, and you will be able to reflect and apply the same.  Likewise, there are a number of ways you can acquire knowledge including reading, observation, training, practice and experience.  It finally paves the way for your excellence.  Are you ready to achieve excellence now?

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” - Vince Lombardi
