“Provide Zero-Based, Structured and Holistic Soft Skills Training Program for Engineering Students” - Professor M.S.Rao

I was asked to create a content plan to provide soft skills training program to engineering students as I earned my PhD in Soft Skills. I adopted the strategy of a zero-based, structured and holistic training program to train and groom students to be industry ready. First of all, I found out the skills gaps between the students and the industry, and then conducted training needs analysis to create the content. I felt that there is a wide gap between the expectations of the industry and availability of the talent. Educational institutions shell out students as per their curriculum which often does not match with the expectations of the industry.  Therefore, it is essential to design the curriculum as per the expectations of the industry to enable the industry to recruit the talent to be productive from Day One. Here is a list of the topics to tailor and customize as per the requirements of the students:
Personality development
Confidence building
Self-esteem
Attitude building
Behavioral skills
Reading skills
Writing skills
Speaking skills
Listening skills
Positive body language
Career planning
MBTI
Emotional intelligence quotient
Intelligence quotient
HR interview skills
Ethics and etiquette
Goal setting
Communication skills
Listening skills
Assertiveness
Conflict management
Soft and hard skills
JAM Sessions
Presentation skills
Emotional intelligence
Negotiation skills
Team building skills
Time management
Resume writing and cover letter
Facing interview
Group discussion
Corporate etiquette
Professional etiquette
Brand building
Creativity
Problem-solving
Decision making

Here is the structured tentative content plan for engineering students for four years:
For 1st year students: personality development, confidence building, self-esteem, choosing career, MBTI, soft skills and hard skills, attitude building, self-motivation, listening skills and goal setting.
For 2nd year students: JAM sessions, debates, extempore speech, delivering presentations, body language, emotional intelligence and negotiation skills.
For 3rd year students: resume preparation, facing interview, grooming skills, and group discussion.
For 4th year students: mock interviews, team building skills, corporate etiquette, corporate challenges, time management, conflict management, leadership skills, creativity, problem-solving skills and decision making.

Each module should of three hours duration and the training sessions can be conducted within four weeks.  The sessions can be extended and adjusted as per the needs of the students and the availability of time apart from regular classes. The sole objective of this content is to prepare employable and deployable students with a long view.
