“I am Always Your Fan! – A Short Story on Attitude” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” - Winston Churchill

I worked in an educational institution as a Professor. I commuted regularly with students in the bus provided by the institution. The educational institution had many colleges under its group, and students from different colleges traveled in the same bus based on their location of living. I lived in a metropolitan city. Hence, students from a particular part of locality, studying in different educational institutions commuted regularly in the college buses. Usually professors preferred to travel separately by car to maintain distance with students, and to have privacy during their commuting time. But I preferred to travel with students in the bus as it energized me due to my passion towards students. It was also an opportunity to understand the psychology of students, and to shape their careers.

In college bus, I regularly observed the attitudes and aspirations of students apart from their tastes and temperaments. Some students talked to me regularly in the bus to clarify their queries on career, personality development and psychology. I was very excited to share my knowledge with them as most of the students are highly ambitious and intelligent with their goals to make a difference. When I liked some of the students who showed more enthusiasm towards learning with a right attitude, I included their names in the dedication list of my authored books to inspire them. I cultivated the habit to include around 50 students in the dedication list of my authored books as it helped them show these books during their employment interview, and also served as a lifetime gift.

However, some of the students rarely came forward to talk to me due to their introvert personality and nature. But I understood from their body language especially from their eye contact, smile and angling of their body postures towards me that they were eager to talk to me but hesitated and felt shy to talk to me.  Since I am also an introvert person by nature I hesitated to talk to them in the college bus. However, I took initiative to talk to them. But due to the interference of other students at that particular time, I lost the opportunity to talk to some of the introverts.  Usually I kept the inclusion of students in the dedication list as confidential to avoid the rest of the students getting hurt for their non-inclusion. Additionally, it was not possible for me to dedicate my book to all students. Hence, I dedicated my book to only deserving and meritorious students.

There were two girls – Swati and Alekhya who were introvert personalities and well-behaved by nature commuted along with me the in the same bus. Both were meritorious students with a positive attitude and a huge potential to grow in their careers. Swati studied in the fourth year while Alekhya studied in the third year of engineering. I tried to talk to them in the bus. But whenever I initiated to talk to them some students came and talked to me in the bus about their careers. Basically I wanted to include their names also in the dedication list of my upcoming authored books.  Academic year came to close, and finally, Swati passed out from college by being the topper.  I always regretted for non-inclusion of her name. By then, Alekhya came to the fourth year of engineering, and one day I invited her for discussion to my office. She was a very polite and soft spoken girl who came to my office with excitement. I clarified her questions on career, and I asked couple of questions to know her areas of interests and goals to achieve in life. I provided some tools and techniques to achieve big in life, and then included her name in the dedication list. Subsequently, I also gifted my authored book to her.

One day I was waiting for bus at the bus station along with my wife.  I saw Swati going along with her friend by scooter. She was so excited to see me. She smiled with excitement and waved her hand with great respect. My wife was intelligent enough to guess that she might be my student.  I said my wife that Swati studied in our college who commuted with me in the college bus, and passed out now as the top scorer.  I also informed her that Swati was excellent student academically with a great attitude. The day night, I was thinking about Swati, and especially for not having included a meritorious student in the dedication list of my just published book. The very next day, I asked Alekhya in the bus about the contact details of Swati. She took initiative and gave me the phone number the very next day.

I am very persistent by nature. When I want something, I will chase it until the end. Hence, same day evening, I telephoned to Swati and asked whether she got employment. She was so excited to receive my telephone call as nobody takes that much interest to call an ex-student as the life had become too busy for everyone.  I shared how much efforts I took to get her contact details. I felt very excited when she greeted me when I was standing with my wife at the bus station three days ago.  She replied, “Sir, you deserve such kind of respect. You take a lot of interest towards students. I observed you regularly in the college bus when I studied. I wanted to talk to you but hesitated.” I was very much excited with her response and felt that she thought about me the way I thought about her and Alekhya.

I enquired whether she got any employment offer. She said that she got a job in a private company, and was happy working in it. She revealed that her father loved her so much that he wanted her to work in the same city. She respected her father’s love, and preferred to work in the same city.  I told her that I tried to talk to her many times in the bus but could not talk due to interference by students, and also due to my continuous reading in the bus. She felt very happy with my comments.  I revealed that I included some of the names of students in the dedication list of my authored books to inspire them. She complimented me that it was a great initiative.  I told that that I would include her name in the dedication list for the upcoming authored book. She replied, “Sir, Thank you very much for your kind heart. Whether you dedicate your book to me or not, I am always your fan!”  I was so much amazed and excited with her prompt response. I felt that I was looking for such kind of students who don’t expect anything from me. I appreciated her positive attitude. Her sincere comment enhanced more respect towards her and made me more responsible to contribute my best to students.

There are many students who ask me regularly about the motivation behind my passion and commitment towards teaching. It was basically because bright students like Swati who motivate me to move forward to make a difference to the students, and to accomplish my lifetime goal to build one million students as global leaders by 2030.

I have taught and trained more than 20,000 students so far. But I will always remember Swati for her positive attitude and comment, “Whether you dedicate your book to me or not. I am always your fan!” Hence, I implore students to emulate from the example set of Swati to grow as good citizens with great attitude.

“My Experience as a Chief Guest on Freshers’ Day” - Professor M.S.Rao

“The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” - William James

Some of my students invited me to attend their freshers’ party. Students of some colleges conduct freshers’ party which is also known as interaction day wherein the senior students give party to junior students to get familiarized and get acquainted within the educational institutions in India.

Usually I don’t attend such parties as I am busy with my routine research and writing assignments. I decided to attend the party as students admire me and have insisted me to attend. Coincidentally, the principal of the educational institution is a very good friend of mine. Before the party was to start, the principle requested me to preside as the ‘Chief Guest’ for which I was unprepared. Secondly, he also advised me to leave a message to students on the eve of interaction day. These two things came to me as a sudden surprise. Hence, I presided as a Chief Guest, and also thought of delivering impromptu speech as I am passionate about students.

After the principal delivered the speech, I started to deliver my speech where I greeted students on the eve of interaction day and started with a story of a philosopher who was approached by two mischievous students.

Two students wanted to test the philosopher, and also to prove him to be wrong. One of the students hid his hands with a bird and asked the philosopher, “People in the town say that you are a very wise man, and a great philosopher. Can you tell the bird I was folding in my hands is dead or alive?” The philosopher understood the intentions of the student and told him, “It is in your hands whether you want to keep the bird alive or dead. If I say that the bird is dead you will show the bird which is already alive to prove me wrong. If I say that the bird is alive you will show the bird as dead by killing it.” The students were surprised with the wisdom of the philosopher and apologized for their mischievous act. Similarly, in real life also, your future is in your hands. It is up to you whether you want to make your future bright or bleak.

I explained to them about the importance of attitude. In fact, attitude plays a crucial role during employment interview. The recruiters hire for attitude and train for skills. Hence, students must build positive, strong and right attitude to succeed in their lives. Remember, it is the attitude that determines your altitude of success.

I spoke with them about the importance of extracurricular activities. Some educational institutions emphasize too much on curricular activities ignoring extracurricular activities which is a retrograde step.  Curricular activities provide subjective knowledge while the extracurricular activities like planning, organizing, and coordinating interaction day equip students with leadership qualities, emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills and soft skills. Precisely, curricular activities equip students with hard skills such as subjective knowledge and technical competence while the extracurricular activities equip students with soft skills. The blend of both soft and hard skills is essential for personality development and career success.  Finally, I implored them to build leadership qualities which are very much essential to build a better and strong India.

I was a memorable and unique experience to share my message to the ignited students on the eve of ‘Interaction Day’.

“My Memorable Experience at the Ticket Booking Office – A Short Story” - Professor M.S.Rao

“Simplicity in character, in manners, in style; in all things the supreme excellence is simplicity.” - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I did not enjoy my vacation with family for the last eight years as I was always busy with continuous learning and my vision to build one million students as global leaders. I mostly spend my time with students to shape and groom them as healthy citizens and global leaders.  I decided to go on tour to Rajasthan with my wife and two sons. I lived in Jodhpur which is in the State of Rajasthan in India from 1986 to 1991. I earned three degrees - MA, PGDBM and PGDCLL during this period and fast-tracked my career.  I earned my PGDCLL by studying in evening college in Jodhpur by working during the day time.  Throughout my life, I followed the concept of ‘earning and learning’. I also loved and married a woman of my choice, and started my first family life there. Hence, Jodhpur is the place I love very much apart from other places in Rajasthan where I travelled widely during the period including Jaisalmeer, Bikaner, Jaipur, Ajmer, Pali, Udaipur, Ranakpur and Abu Road to name a few.

My wife, two sons and I brainstormed for hours, and finally prepared a blueprint to visit the places in Rajasthan within nine days. I went to a local office to book tickets by a train.  A woman approximately 24 years of age was in the office. I could see her face only from the place where I stood. She was looking at the computer screen doing her work. I was unable to have the physical view of her computer screen and activities.  I told her the names of my wife, two sons and my name as Professor M.S.Rao to book the tickets to Jaisalmeer.  She asked me, “Are you Professor M.S.Rao?”  I said, “Yes. Kindly book the tickets to Jaisalmeer.”  She looked at my face with disbelief and started doing something with her computer screen which I was unable to see. I felt that she was taking more time to give tickets. I reminded her to give me tickets as I had other tasks to do. She said curtly, “Please wait. I am doing your task only.”  I waited for sometime by standing. She was busy with computer screen but not giving me tickets. I asked her assertively, “Why are you taking a lot of time to give me tickets?”  She changed her tone and replied politely, “Sir, I am doing your task only.” I waited for some more time. Finally, I got annoyed and enquired her, “How much time will you take to give me tickets? I have to go elsewhere. You are taking a lot of time. Are you giving me tickets or playing games in your computer?”  She shouted with ectacy, “I got you sir. You are Professor M.S.Rao! My guess is right!” She shouted as if she invented something in her life. Here face was filled with lots of excitement!  I was confused with her craziness. I asked her, “I don’t understand what you got me.”  She stood up and said with great respect, “When you said your name as Professor M.S.Rao I was checking in the Google whether you are the same ‘Professor M.S.Rao, Born for the Students’. When I was in college one year ago, I was regularly reading your blog containing posts on students, career, interview and leadership. I regularly read your posts and acquired immense knowledge. I also followed your interview questions that helped me grab employment offer. When I saw your face asking for tickets I was thinking that somewhere I saw your face. When you said your name as Professor M.S.Rao I was thinking about your blogs. In order to confirm whether you are the same person, I took a little longer time to check your blog containing your photo instead of giving you tickets. I apologize for the delay. But I am excited to meet you in person.”

Initially I was annoyed with her delay but later I realized that she had acquired knowledge something from my blog. I was very much excited that my knowledge gets spread, and is useful to many. And I was more excited to hear it from an unknown person.

I congratulated her for getting the employment. I asked her to find out the ways to improve the posts in the blog as I believed two things in my life – continuous learning and constant feedback.  She felt that she was quite happy with my blog posts and said that she was my follower and many of her friends in the college read my blog posts.

She said, “I was under the impression that you live in New Delhi.”  Then I replied that I travel around widely to conduct training programs on leadership, and currently stay in the same city and locality. She was surprised, “I thought you might be a great personality with international travel, but you appear like a common man. You seem to believe in simplicity and humility!”  I said that I believe in simplicity, and I rarely reveal my identity to others and about my blogs with others. I love to associate with common people like a common man. I also added, “I am not a great personality. I rose from humble origins and I rarely forget my roots.  I want to die as a common man rather than as a great personality.”

She was excited with my conversation, and she not willing to leave me. She added that she gained lots of knowledge. She said that she would not charge the commission for booking the tickets. I told her to charge as they have overheads. She refused to take the commission for booking tickets. Finally, I requested her to take minimum commission. She took minimum charges and gave me tickets physically. I was a memorable day in my life as I was happy that my knowledge was useful to many people thus making a difference to the society.
